THE GLORY ROAD: LESSON 2 – March 11th, 2018

Luke 10:1-12 “Better Together”

“After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two.”  Luke 10:1

OPENING: What are some examples of being better together?  How does this apply to sharing the Gospel?

TEXT: Read Luke 10:1-12 or 1-20 slowly and prayerfully using different readers and/or translations.

  1. How would you summarize this passage in one word?  Underline your key word and circle your key verse. Consider this passage a locker room speech before the big game.  What did he want his followers to do? What were some of the keys to winning? How equipped and empowered do you think the seventy-two were for this mission?  Jesus gave a couple of key commands to his followers, what were they and why were they significant to the mission? If this is THE GLORY ROAD, what can we expect as we journey down this road?  What is a son/child of peace? Do you have any of these people in your life right now? Are you welcomed into their homes or lives?

  1. Jesus said that the harvest is plentiful, and the laborers are few.  In what ways is the harvest still plentiful? Where in our community do you see the greatest need to send laborers today?  Who are the laborers in our church? Do you consider yourself a laborer? Being a laborer for the harvest is God’s PLAN A for our lives.  Do you agree or disagree? How would our church be different if everyone considered themselves a laborer? Why do you think that Jesus sent them together?

  1. If you were one of the seventy-two how do you think you would have felt?  Did Jesus want the laborers to know that they would be accepted by many or rejected by many?  What does it mean that there is a Lord of the harvest? Who is it? Why did he want his laborers to know it was the Lord’s harvest and not the laborer’s harvest?

  1. DIG DEEPER: What does the phrase “peace to this house” mean to you?  What did it mean to Luke (see 1:79; 2:14; 2:29; 7:50; 8:48; 19:38; 19:42; 24:36)?  Peace is something more than a wish, it is something that both Luke and Jesus want the people to possess.  How does that impact the way we share the gospel with others? Jesus gave three commissions to his followers (Luke 9:1-6; 10:1-12; 22:35-38).  In what ways are these commissions similar and different and what does that mean?

  1. THE GOSPEL: As we approach Easter it is imperative that we know the gospel’s “good news”.  What is the gospel according to Jesus as he spoke to Martha in John 11:24-27? What does Jesus want us to believe (see also John 3:16, 5:24, 6:40, 20:31)?  What was the gospel according to Paul as he spoke to the church in Corinth in 1 Corinthians 15:3-5? Why is it so hard for us as Christians to share the good news of Jesus?  At the bare minimum we as Christians should be able to share our story of how Christ has changed our lives. Who are some people you need to share the gospel with today?

NEXT STEP:  Pray for us as a church family to live out God’s PLAN A as we approach Easter.  Let us pray for the biggest and most effective harvest ever this Easter. PRAY, GO and SHARE the gospel with others.
